I've Created A Big PinkOrange Monster

"I love fandom, even if I struggle with what it has become these days---I believe in a fandom where we talk about > things that bring us joy, things that we love, and uplift others while doing so. I believe in a fandom that is a supportive and equal community first and foremost. I want to help make it that way. "

Welcome & What's New, femslash.club

I wrote this in August of this year. Barely a damn month ago. Already, I am struggling to believe it.

When I first began Sunset Archive, I was confident I could create a better place in fandom. I believed I could make a difference and cultivate a space within fandom that was positive, uplifting, and beautiful, where everyone is taken in good faith and everyone treats others with respect. I faced some hardships, like my site being blasted to the public when I thought I was ready but truly wasn't—and that lead to people accusing me of wanting to dox M/M shippers, people accusing me of being a data harvester, people questioning whether or not I'm a transphobe simply for having an F/F site (and being accused of only pretending to care about transfeminist causes because 'my f/f ships aren't popular'), and worse. I've faced harassment and name calling and vagueposting for who I am, for the pronouns I use, for my name, for my sexuality. But the worst and most hurtful thing that has happened so far was an accusation made against me claiming I censored mentions of Palestine on the site, when in reality I created Sunset partially out of disdain for AO3's anti-Palestinian sentiments.

What actually happened is that someone wrote a fanfic about Palestine intending to "educate others", but the fanfic read as deeply dehumanizing and objectifying to a Palestinian friend of mine. When that Palestinian friend told this author that, they doubled down saying it wasn't their intent so it was fine to write a fic where every character voiced by Tara Strong sits down to have a conversation on Palestine that ends with the main character saying ""See you all next week. If it's Sunday, it's Meet the Mess", sitting in a cushy leather chair wondering how she can get her show's rating up next. (I mean, it is fine, technically, in the free speech sense, you just can't complain when people find it offensive.) My friend spoke up, this person kept being unbearably rude to my friend—claiming to care about Palestinians, but actually refusing to listen to one they were directly speaking to, felt deeply offensive and unacceptable in my book so I banned them. I did not "ban them for mentioning Palestine" as they claimed, I banned them for harassing my Palestinian friend. And frankly it's my site and I'm not sorry for it. If you're going to harass Palestinians for simply criticizing your behavior, you're going to face the consequences. I don't care. It's my site and I can do whatever I want.

(That doesn't mean I'm going to ban anyone I don't like. I actually hate banning people. I prefer to take people in good faith at all possible times—it just wasn't possible here and I am not just saying that. If you're going to harass Palestinians, you get banned. Simple.)

This person then went on to claim I am pro-censorship, and these claims were parroted by a blog that conflates proshippers to rapists in their DNI, saying directly that I am anti-Palestine when that is so far from what happened it is actually insane. And I'm offended, because it fucking hurts to be accused of supporting a horrific genocide when I don't. That is an actual fucking disgusting thing to do to someone and I don't think people realize the seriousness and breadth of that claim. And see, it doesn't fucking matter, because writing fanfics about Tara Strong learning her lesson does nothing to help ACTUAL PALESTINIANS. Me being offended doesn't matter either. What matters is donating and spreading awareness for the people who are actually fucking suffering under the most horrific conditions imaginable.

Anyway, this has made me really reconsider what I want to do with Sunset going forward, because what I have cultivated is only bringing me stress. People have told me my community is life-changing for them—why can't I focus on that? I just keep thinking about what I'd do differently if I could restart Sunset with what I know now. I can't seem to find a way to let the good outweigh the bad. I genuinely love Sunset, but at times I feel like I've created a big pinkorange monster. I never wanted it to blow up on Reddit or Tumblr or anywhere. I wanted a chill, community-focused space—like my friend Melo of Superlove and like Steff of Ad Astra have cultivated. I don't know how to make Sunset into something that brings me joy to run. At 585 users, we're the third largest OTW-Archive site after Squidgeworld (I believe?), and I find myself only experiencing dread when I open the admin panel.

If I could do Sunset over again, I would keep it to only science fiction femslash. A friend of mine made a great point; why host an archive of things I'm not familiar with? (No hate—I love y'all—but I don't know most medias on Sunset.) Science fiction is the love of my life. I also find that sci-fi fans tend to be more chill in general—it wouldn't have lead to my site being noticed by rabid antis because they'd know the site wasn't for them.

If I could do everything all over again, I'd keep it invite only. You can only post to my site if I invite you or if someone I invited invites you. That way I'd have full control over my site and who uses it. I have been far too lenient with who I let in—it's how that rabid anti who parroted that lie about me got in. (And they still have their Sunset profile link in their pinned post…)

I think I really need to think about what I want to do with Sunset going forward. I'm keeping the invite queue closed for the time being. Not forever. But for a while. I'm in my 5th attempt at my freshman year of college and I need to focus on that. I also want to focus more on my original creative work going forward. I'm getting really into making TTRPG rules and I want to write one. I also want to write a novel. On my 2026 Bingo card I have write at least 15k on the same project and I just. I have to get it done. I have to. I have to be more of a person.

So, yeah. There's that.

September 23 Stream Of Consciousness

In the morning woke up at like 6am and thought it was Wednesday (it was Tuesday.) I couldn't remember the entire week. I couldn't remember anything for the past few months. I felt like I was living a stranger's life. I kind of still do.

On Sunday I went to meeting and I feel like I'm being rude when I don't stay for social stuff after silent worship, but my mom drives me since I don't have a license, and we live far enough away from the meeting that it makes no sense to drive back home during it just to drive back barely an hour later, so my mom stays in the car the whole time. Bless her. When silent worship is over she is always in pain from sitting there so I have to leave. Sunday was our potluck and a very nice old lady leaned over to me and said, "You know, everyone's welcome," and I cried!! They're so nice! Quakers are so damn nice!! We also gave the meeting kids each a book the community picked out for them. I can't wait to participate in next year's. I said I'd volunteer for one of their events to chaperone kids, but I thought it was the 21st when it was the 19th and I missed it. NOT giving off a good first impression :-( I feel really bad about it, but I can only do better going forward.

Honestly, Quakerism has been so good for me. I look forward to meeting every week. I love silent worship because it's sort of like customize your character worship; it is what you make of it. I listen and listen. I meditate. I think of God and how They gave us a beautiful world, where we're still discovering new cat species previously unknown to science, where there are people who see me for who I am - me in my entirety, guts n' all - where there are meetinghouses who focus on social justice work and elderly women who ask your pronouns - where there are community self-serve farm stands and local marijuana "farmer's markets" and an Old Town painted in rainbow. I think of God and how I was given such a beautiful life -one that I am immensely lucky and privileged to have. I think of God and how I see Them in my mother taking me to meeting and staying the entire hour - I see Them in my friends' kind words to me and their hug emoji reacts on Discord - I see Them in the greeter at local comic con who wheeled my wheelchair all the way into the con after I fell on my ass trying to get it out of the car - I see Them in my bird and the local bird owner community - God is everywhere in my life, or rather I see God everywhere in my life, or rather I am reminded of God everywhere in my life (these are 3 different things). I am just grateful I have found a religious path focused on equality, one where I can actually be a part of the IRL community unlike when I was interested in other faiths.

(Good lord, that was an obnoxiously Midwestern American paragraph!)

I feel like I'm floating through school and not in a good way? I am sort of just fluttering around. I don't feel like I'm doing it right; I have a 4.0 GPA at the moment. I guess I thought it'd be more challenging? My therapist said the kind of work I want to do is usually reserved for grad school and I think she's right. I just want to study the things I enjoy and find interesting. Let me write papers on religion! I am a religious studies major!!!!!!!! I know this is my first semester of freshman year but!! But!! Anyway I get things done minutes before the deadline, but I get them done. I sure as fuck do get them done. This is the longest I've ever kept up with college in my life, by the way. Previous record was 3 weeks. It's been a month.

Surgery recovery is going well. I've had no pain at all and am back on my feet for the most part. Ordering a lot of post-surgery gifts to myself (commissions of my Star Trek fan kid OCs on vgen). I got a drawing tablet--a super cheap one - and I've been drawing a lot. I find myself really liking what I'm drawing with it. The pressure settings on a tablet are so different than the pressure settings on a Samsung A8. I need to try out doing a non-sketchy piece with it, but I've been focusing mainly on remaking this site.

I've remade my site... let's see. Neocities -> Nekoweb -> Neocities -> Bearblog -> Self-hosted wordpress -> Self-hosted hand coded rails application -> OTWArchive personal site edition -> Bearblog -> Pika for like 3 seconds -> PureBlog self-hosted, and I think/hope I'm stopping here. I have a major inability to decide or be happy with one thing for a long period of time, and that's something I'm working on and have made a lot of progress on lately. I mean, I've stuck with my IRL name since 2022, which is the longest I've stuck with a chosen name literally ever.

I love all the features PureBlog has. It's perfect for me. I sort of want to go back and gather screenshots of old versions of my site for another post, because it's really so fun to look back on. I've been doing a lot of looking back lately. I still sort of feel like I'm stuck in 2013. I don't know why. I also feel like I'm stuck in 2019. And 2022. And - well, you get the idea. I feel like every week is a different me. I am never static; the past is just a collection of my echoes.

Usually my stream of consciousness posts are poetic but this one isn't, really. That's fine. I'm trying to be okay with putting everything in one place. Like, just dumping it on one site, on one blog. I used to be really weird about where I'd put what kind of updates but no longer. Though I do want to use my self-hosted Dreamwidth more.

Beeminder charged me $5 today because I didn't write... oh well. I want to start my novel but I never have the motivation to do anything meaningful or productive. I need to study and work on my exchange assignments and write my novel and I am doing none of those things! I just sit on the computer and scroll. I am unable to pull myself away these past few days. Just mindless scrolling. I hate it.

I want to start Half His Age. Mostly because my wheel spin gave it to me, and also because my novel is sort of somewhat similar in concept and I'm curious. One of my most trusted literature-loving mutuals did not care for McCurdy's prose, but I'm waiting to see what I think of it. I haven't read since I finished Fruit Fly at Spravato last week...

I find my brain goes too fast for me these days, and simultaneously too slowly. Maybe that's it. Maybe that's the big motivation block and not avolition. I really want it to be something besides avolition but I think avolition is the most likely cause of this (mixed with ADHD which doesn't help) and that makes me so mad. My brain is just so scattered. Parts of it are spinning exoplanet-fast and parts of it are still learning how to walk. I don't know how to gather myself up enough to be me? To be a person. It's really frustrating. I feel like there's a Minecraft creeper guarding my ability to start projects.

Anyway.. I don't know how to end posts. So I'll end with a question.

How do YOU motivate yourself to start projects??? Besides Beeminder.

Creating A Stats Page In PureBlog

I recently started stopped using PureBlog for my main IndieWeb home, but I really like it. I have been making some additions for it, such as an automatically updating sitemap, but here's a simple statistics page too. Basically copied from admin/dashboard.php with some alterations.

  1. Go to routes and enter this:

/stats | /content/includes/stats.php

  1. Make stats.php in content/includes on your server and the contents should be this:

require PUREBLOG_BASE_PATH . '/includes/header.php';
render_masthead_layout($config, ['page' => null]);

?>

<main>
 <h1> Stats </h1>
<?php

$publishedPosts = array_values(array_filter(get_all_posts(true), static fn(array $post): bool => ($post['status'] ?? 'draft') === 'published'));
$publishedCount = count($publishedPosts);
$tz = site_timezone_object($config);
$now = new DateTimeImmutable('now', $tz);
$currentYear = (int) $now->format('Y');

$publishedThisYear = 0;
$totalWordsThisYear = 0;
$tagCounts = [];
$tagCountsThisYear = [];
$tagDisplayNames = [];
$totalWords = 0;
$allTimeMonthCounts = array_fill(1, 12, 0);

Creating An Automatically Updating Sitemap In PureBlog

I recently switched from PureBlog to Chyrp, but here are my old tutorials.

I altered THIS CODE SNIPPET by David Carr for it.

Basically, this takes a list of the files in your pureblog/content/pages directory and retrieves it for the page with its title. Note that I'm using my dockerized version so please edit accordingly. When I learn more PHP, I will be updating this with categories and alphabetical sorting. For now though:

  1. Make a file called sitemap-auto.php in content/includes/

  2. Make a custom route in settings

/sitemap-auto | /content/includes/sitemap-auto.php

  1. Copy the code below or here

require PUREBLOG_BASE_PATH . '/includes/header.php';
render_masthead_layout($config, ['page' => null]);

?>

<main>
<h1> Sitemap</h1>

<?php

$directory = '/var/www/html/content/pages/';

$files = scandir($directory);

echo "<ul>";

foreach ($files as $file) {
    if ($file !== "." && $file !== "..") {
        $name = pathinfo($file, PATHINFO_FILENAME);
  $path = $directory . '/' . $file;
    $contents = file_get_contents($path);

       preg_match('/^title:\s*(.+)$/m', $contents, $matches);

    $title = $matches[1] ?? pathinfo($file, PATHINFO_FILENAME);

    $url = '/' . pathinfo($file, PATHINFO_FILENAME);

    echo '<li>🛸 <a href="' . htmlspecialchars($url) . '">'
        . htmlspecialchars(trim($title))
        . '</a></li>';
}
}
echo "</ul>";
?>

</main>
<?php render_footer_layout($config, ['page' => null]); ?>
</body>
</html>
  1. Put it in /content/includes/sitemap-auto.php

You're done :)

This will automatically update when a new file is in the pages list.

Weekly Book Thoughts: Fruit Fly - Josh Silver

Ugh. When the book everyone is raving about is actually really fucking good. Don't you hate it when that happens?

Fruit Fly took me a while to finish. I didn't want to exit the web that Silver wove here—this insane, complex little web where Mallory and Leo and Mandy and Liam are all insects caught in the silk and the literary world is the hungry carnivorous spider. I simply had to let this book's cannibalism of me take its time. I read about 50-80 pages at a time, put it down for 2-3 days, then picked it back up and read 50-80 more pages. Repeat. It's kind of like why I still haven't finished Extraordinary, or Community, or Stumble, or Second Best Hospital; I just do not like to say goodbye.

And these are incredibly hard characters to say goodbye to. They are both heavily sympathetic terrible people, watery messes of traits on a canvas (this sounds like a criticism of Silver's writing, most likely, but is a compliment); they make each other worse. Worse, worse, worse. It's so FUN. Mallory's obsession with Leo that grows out of the disdain she has for her reality is tasty, and I think that a lot of people can relate to Mallory's role here, despite the instabilities her circumstances have caused. (It is this aspect of the book that made me recommend it to my mother.) At the same time though, Mallory is unbearable, a crumpled ball of posh, pretentious privilege that Leo picks up and slam dunks into the trash can; she is like a mashed vegetable casserole of insanities and repressions, each shitty aspect of her life plucked from the ground in root form, the green tops chopped off, the meat of it all placed delicately in a dish and cooked at 350 for 1-1 ½ hours. (Actually, in the book, it is fish.)

Her husband and her mother take her out of the oven and eat her. The left-over parts of the carcass, the bones and grossflesh of it all, are what goes to Leo. And Leo is, of course, at his core, hungry. I think in a way Mallory becomes an addiction of sorts for him too; at the end of the book he replaces drugs with her. The interwovenness of the metaphors Silver uses—how their chapters bleed into one another, how she compares Liam to Timothee Chalamet and he later compares himself to Timothee Chalamtet, the parallels—-and how the book emphasizes the similarities between Leo and Mallory (to the point of almost hitting you on the head with it at the end) - just makes me wonder…

Leo says (IIRC) that what Liam wants and what Mandy wants are the same. Liam is gay. Mallory gets into the gay nightlife chemsex scene to sell her book, yes, but her obsession with Leo and becoming Leo/Liam/his mind as well as his sexuality… it reads both as exploitation and yearning to me. Bittersweet. The Willy Wonka bit that gives you an entire dinner in gum-stick form, each flavor flooding in after another; she is using Leo in this way because she needs him for every single flavor of her life, success and sanity, freedom and status, etc. She needs to be in the gay nightlife part of him specifically because the instability is her stability. She needs it because it is what she is craving—yes, an escape from her emotionally abusive husband and her shitty predictable life, but also. I think this could very easily be read with the interpretation of Mallory as a very closeted and repressed transgender man?

She downloads grindr and pretends to be a man. She takes photos of her husband and pretends to be him. It is the only thrill and excitement she has experienced since the release of her last book. I really could not get this reading out of my mind as the chapters went on, and as they continued to drill in the similarities between Leo and Mallory at their core. What Leo wants is what Mallory wants, and Leo wants men as a man. He even is explicitly attracted to her husband—-and Leo calls himself Mallory's boyfriend at one point too.

Leo and Mallory are two sides of a coin. I find it especially interesting that they invert one another in the sense that despite Leo's present, chaotic life, his past was relatively normal (or at least he describes it as such) - and in Mallory's case, despite her perfectly normal pristine life, she is deeply chaotic on the inside.

Like I said before, Leo is hungry. At first he wants to steal from Mallory, but what he really wants is another hand to eat out of, I think? One he hasn't driven away over and over and over again with his mistakes. He wants a hand to eat out of and he wants that hand to stroke his back and tell him he will make it even though the hand is bleeding desperately at its chipped, candy-red fingernails. He starves with a need he doesn't know how to satiate and believes in his own taintedness, and Mallory wants someone to care for that isn't the baby Ronan is trying to force her to have. Leo is it. She is also in love with him, I think, LOL. When asked if he views the book as "a kind of romance", Silver writes,

I think there’s a sort of toxic love between them. They are infatuated with each other in a certain way. It’s not a sexual desire, but it’s certainly rooted in a kind of connection.

Very careful wording there, Silver ;)

Anyway, stoned rambling aside, while I deeply enjoyed this book, there were a few parts that fell flat? The writing in Mallory's chapters—especially at the beginning—read heavily as an almost cartoonish depiction of the rich white author image, taken to the absolute maximum. At times Silver's writing feels one-dimensional in its portrayal and development of Mallory and Leo, and Ronan's characterization gradually literally flatlines as the book goes on; he becomes less and less of a character and turns into more of an Abusive Bro Husband flavored LaCroix. Overall though I found Mallory and Leo both to be interesting characters, relatable in ways that maybe they shouldn't be, and the connection between them is absolutely the selling point of the book. It ties everything together.

There were times I felt the prose was elementary, and there were times that the prose impressed me. Honestly, the prose itself was my least favorite part of the book. I found Leo and Mallory's poem snippets especially insufferable here… Silver's grasp on storytelling is what makes this novel work so well for me, and I do wonder how I would have felt reading Mallory's earlier chapters if I was not already obsessed with the "older woman ("older" "woman") with a weird fixation on a younger man" dynamic. Like, I may have DNF'd it there, but I'm glad I kept going with it, truly.

Also how was Mallory's mom taking online courses in administration if Mallory is in her 30s at the youngest. Did I misread that part.

I really enjoyed this book, and will definitely be requesting it for the Yuletide exchange this year. I kind of need to read Leo's book. I kind of need to write it, too.

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5.

Write For Yourself, Unless I Don't Like It

Yeah, this is another post about posting, sorry. I simply couldn’t help myself. I wrote about this phenomenon in I Don’t Blog Right, but I think back then I was seeing a different side of the blogosphere than I see now. I am, lethally, an optimist.

One thing I am seeing a lot in the blogosphere is the idea that bloggers owe you something with their writing. Proper grammar, posts that make sense, posts about certain topics or posts that are expected to avoid certain topics (“traumadumping” - God, I hate that term). Posts written palatably, acceptably, normally.

I don’t think that is very fair. People shouldn’t be expected to blog with the intention of pleasing others—or with the intention of being perceived by others at all. Yes, there is the argument that by putting it online, you are inviting criticism and you cannot control who sees your work… but why does that always have to be the defense? Why do we have to say "you should have to put up with anything anyone says about your posts, no matter how rude or unnecessary, simply because you decided to have a website for fun"? I would agree with this opinion more if blogging happened to be not blogging but rather an academic class…. this isn't the case though. Oh, but sorry, apparently that isn't a valid argument.

(I also have a memory of my Honors Composition I professor telling me that she once contemplated docking points on a paper for some lack of punctuation, but before doing so she decided to ask the student about the choice. It had been a personal narrative essay about a difficult experience, and this student had written I believe a single paragraph without using commas, just on and on. The student said: “I wrote it this way because that is how it felt in the moment. Like an uncontrollable, endless spiral that never stops or slows down.” And she understood, giving said student full points for the assignment.)

Blogging is intentionally nebulous, at least to me! Blogging is what you make of it. I said this in the aforementioned post in the form of viewpoints I have seen from others… but I realized that I am seeing less of those views now. So here I am saying it directly:

There is no wrong way to blog. Blogging can be personal, or it can be about a specific topic you're passionate about, or it can be about your work, or it can be about what your Sims did today. THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO EXPRESS YOURSELF (EXCEPT TO EXPRESS BIGOTRY) AND CONSIDERING BLOGGING IS A HIGHLY INDIVIDUALIZED PURSUIT, I EXPECT YOU TO BE YOU!! NOT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE WANT YOU TO BE!!!!!

Some say that proper craft is just as important as self-expression with writing, and I posit that not everyone wants to write pristinely. In fact, I personally find myself enjoying writing that primarily prioritizes self-expression more than writing that focuses on clear-cut rules—especially in an age of AI "writing", when mistakes prove humanity. Both in blogging and in literature, I find that emotional impact is more important to me than how a story reads on a technical level. In literature I cannot really immerse myself in a story with dry prose, for example—it feels incomplete and superficial to me. I deeply enjoy stories with unconventional/experimental formatting and unique utilization of the literary device, and in blogging I do not expect people to follow rules of any sort. Published literature is different, but I think just about anything can be acceptable if you are intentional and specific in what you're trying to achieve by breaking convention.

One user writes, "Haste makes waste, or at least incomprehensible drivel. … If you want people to read what you have to say and think about your point of view then stating your case clearly is absolutely necessary." But this assumes the goal of writing is or should be the desire to be witnessed and understood, and I simply do not agree with that at all. I don't write because I want people to think of me as valid. I used to, but I'm moving away from that. I write because I have to write. I have to put words on paper; if I go too long without writing I am boiling myself alive. It's like sleep deprivation—you go long enough without sleeping and you eventually just lose consciousness—-if I go too long without writing I lose myself. Words are harmless opioids to me. I cannot write without writing, and to me writing is sometimes messy, and weird, and unpalatable. I do not have any interest in writing that tries to be palatable.

I also am uncomfortable with the use of terms such "intelligible" in these posts, as someone with a psychotic disorder that causes disorganized thinking. I write what I know, and my brain only knows disorganization. Is my point of view lesser simply because I struggle to write without heavy usage of metaphor and imagery? My brain thinks in abstract concepts. I cannot really think in a conventional sense. I write in the aforementioned post:

"When I think, I am either catching each thought like a snowflake on my tongue and letting it melt inward, herding the thoughts up like a sheepdog, or excavating them - I do not think in linear words like most others do, I approach thoughts as clusters of actions, like I have to collect or chew on or swallow or do Some Action To my thoughts before I can properly think them. I remember things like going up and down a hotel elevator; each year is a floor, each door a memory. I yearn like a scooping out."

This is how I am, and therefore it is how I write.

(Yet my first publication was my first ever submission. Interesting!)

Another user writes, "We're writing "our own thoughts,".... and doing so with the intention of being understood, using words whose definitions are known and grammatical conventions which exist for certain purposes. The subjectivity of writing is more akin to whether chocolate or vanilla cupcakes are better, not to whether cupcakes are better baked with sugar or cyanide." I just find that comparison to be extreme, ludicrous, and pretentious. Writing you do not understand isn't lethal or toxic. It is just writing!

A lot of these posts use "you don't have to read criticism" as the basis of their argument, and well… you also don't have to leave it. Your voice is not more important, more special, or more interesting than the voice of the author—-and attempting to insist so can lean heavily into classism and racism. Sarah Khan writes:

"I noticed a slew of people — whom I call language purists — suddenly coming to the defense of the English language as if it were in danger of a sudden demise rather than the powerful, omnipotent, contradictory colonial monster that it actually is… Putting aside the fact that this line of thought implies blindly following the rules and never stopping to consider whether they make sense or are even just, the point of any standardized language is so that there’s a baseline to which everyone speaking that language can refer when any confusion comes up. And that baseline is not set in stone — nothing about language is ever set in stone! The beauty of language is that it is so malleable and is perpetually evolving. If a language stops evolving, it dies (See: Latin!) English is like the colonial settler of language (unsurprisingly) in that it constantly takes from all other languages, claims the stolen parts as its own, and then has the audacity to say certain dialects aren’t “correct.” The whole damn language today is a mishmash of a variety of tongues and the grammatical rules vary from place to place and make little to no sense whatsoever. And don’t even get me started on some of the pronunciations of words in this mess of a language.

Too many people — including teachers, academics, editors and writers — believe things like slang and African American Vernacular English are abhorrent, not realizing that the latter has its own, distinct grammatical and syntactical rules (which often are more complex than that of standard English) and the former is a perfect way to see the language in flux. This dismissal of dialects spoken predominantly by people who are lower-income and/or BIPOC shows how language is used to not only dehumanize people but also to further dominate them. Insisting that standardized English is synonymous with “correct” English totally ignores the fact that not everyone has the privilege (or ability or even interest) to be able to learn the absurdities of this language. School systems across the world are not uniform and, often, only the wealthy can afford to ensure that they receive a top-tier education. And even those who do afford the best teachers may not always be able to take advantage of them. Developmental and learning disabilities are a reality and able-bodied, neurotypical folk don’t really make life easier by policing speech. Language purists seem to think that everyone is given the same opportunities and is born with the same abilities to take advantage of those opportunities."

I just… What is your intention when offering this criticism? What do you hope to achieve with it—change in someone else's personal blog posts? How is that not entitlement in and of itself? How is saying "And, inevitably, sometimes it [writing] means becoming discouraged and questioning whether you're good enough even to bother putting your fingers on the keyboard. That is good too." not incredibly rude and pretentious? Like, no, Christian Baby, suffering does not inherently invite salvation or progress. You can claim you care about "introspection" and "craft" all you want, but refusing to consider the person behind the writing does the writing itself a disservice; it would not exist without them! It is just fucking rude. Do we still care about being kind in 2026?

Agnes the Unpredaceous Diving Beetle

I recently learned about Baby Face, the predaceous Diving Beetle who emerged as an adult still retaining its larval form's head. It passed away today, being observed by its owner who I believe is an entomologist? I wish I had learned of it before now, but in a way I am glad I did not, because its death would have brought me both relief, knowing it no longer suffers, and more agony at the fact that there simply wasn't any other outcome. The poor thing couldn't even eat. In the linked video its owner drops food into its tank and it runs over to the food, observes the food, and realizes that it cannot, with its head in such a state, consume the dead cricket. And then it just sort of floats there, holding the cricket underneath it, unmoving.

I wish I could talk to the dead, you know? Sometimes I think I can but I don't think it's true. I don't even know what I believe in regarding that. But if I got a genie lamp, I think "I wish Baby Face could come back to life—" (no, that's not it, life is the problem for Baby Face!) or maybe "I wish Baby Face could hear me—" (no, that'd end up with me dead because I know how genie magic works, thank you very much) or maybe "I wish Baby Face had been able to comprehend that it was so deeply loved by so many people on this weird soul wire we call the Internet. Can you tell it?"

I think that would be a pretty harmless wish.

If you haven't guessed by now, I am Baby Face. I feel like I am, anyway. I'm not dead, like Baby Face is, but I am trapped behind my own body. It was theorized by some that Baby Face had its adult head trapped within the larval head as some sort of underdeveloped mush, a cage within a cage within a cage, its little childhood brain unable to form itself into coherency. It is so young in the head. It is just trapped there in its own head, in its own head, in its own baby head. I am trapped here: in my own head. They call that dissociation though, and it is not considered unique. Usually it isn't considered anything.

I wonder—did it even realize that it was different? Did it realize at all that the process had gone wrong, and spit back out something most would call even more grotesque than its usual form? The funny thing about Baby Face is that it is a predaceous diving beetle—it hunts prey. And it is an insect, a form of life most consider beyond worthless. Very few are giving the regular, unbabied diving beetle any thought beyond maybe how fucked up it is—they kill their prey by releasing a juice that digests it alive, they literally turn their prey to liquid. They also resort to cannibalism when other food is scarce. The diving beetle is a galactic footnote, except for this specific one. I am terrified of turning into a regular diving beetle, and I hate myself for comparing myself to Baby Face at all. I am not special. I do not have the same uniqueness. I am only the same in the sense that I am an unmiracle, and I have the same suffering.

I cannot eat either, and I am just trapped alongside Baby Face, the body of an adult with an undeveloped brainmush sloshing around in my tiny toddler head, pasted atop an overgrown body like an art class collage, but this time around I don't even have venom I can cannibalize the predaceous man with. I didn't realize what happened until I was 13. Do you think Baby Face knew that there was something wrong with it, or do you think it died trying to figure out why it couldn't eat? Do you think its last thoughts were of hunger? Do you think his last thoughts were of hunger, or do you think I even occurred to him at all? No, he is not Baby Face, because he is not unique. The news these days tells me that he is not at all unique. I am Baby Face, the natural-born-predator that can no longer predate.

Did Baby Face even realize it had been defanged? Tamed? Turned helpless? Humans are actually nested right in the middle of the food chain, next to anchovies! Do you think most people realize how close we are to being liquefied like that, by the world around us, at all times? That everything is temporary? That we don't have to eat prey or our own kind, that we are not trapped behind sticky, unyielding, ossified flesh—we can break free, even if Baby Face can't, even if I can't? I believe in the inherent goodness of animal by virtue of its inability to fathom prejudice, and yet I recognize that most animals are still predatory, just by nature this time. Do you think we realize that there is something more out there for us, that we don't have to trap children inside of their own heads anymore? Everyone has a choice, except for when they don't.

I am sad that Baby Face had to suffer. I think I can empathize with this bug more than I can empathize with my own baby head. Yesterday I told my mom I couldn't believe I just let all that shit happen, as if I wasn't one of those little exceptions to the rule of everyone having a choice. As if I was not Baby Face walking, a human with a disgusting larval head that everyone can see but are just trying really hard to ignore because it's too difficult to talk about. There's a problem for another day.

Weekly Book Thoughts; The Orange Eats Creeps, Low Kill Shelter, The Seep

Starting a new post series here, thoughts on books I am reading as I venture back into the world of literature now that I have ADHD meds. I’m not calling them book reviews because the word reviews makes it sound serious and intentional in my opinion, when I am literally just rambling bullshit. This week's book Thoughts are for Grace Krilanovich's The Orange Eats Creep, Porpentine Charity Heartscape's Low Kill Shelter, and Chana Porter's The Seep.

The Orange Eats Creeps was one of the first books I picked up when I was first prescribed my stimulants. I can't really remember who recommended it to me but I know I didn't find it on my own, and if I hadn't been told about it, I probably never would've stumbled across it. I am so, so deeply glad I did, though.

This is going to sound a little mean, but I promise I mean it sincerely - TOEC is the book that made me realize there really is someone out there for everyone (everyone being every book, that is.) Like, this book consistently gets negative or confused reviews on Storygraph, but I connected with it instantly. Its plot is incredibly nebulous in every sense that the word 'nebulous' provokes--it is dark, vague, and vast; it is celestial and chill and void; is scattered and vibrant with both pulsating, beautiful light and a burning darkness, like the stars were before pollution clouded them all away. Reading this novel feels like - you know how on Lexx, if you committed a crime, you were put in a machine that harvested all of your organs at once for the "protein bank" and fed them to a giant destruction machine? Or how on Babylon 5, the Narn were vivisected as "punishment"? Or the Invader Zim episode where Zim just kept stuffing organs into himself to make him appear more human? It feels like that to read.

It really does feel like each word is being poured, molten and golden and bubbling, down the space between all of my organs, into the cycle of their systems, decimating flesh to just a black char. (There is a sequence near the end of the book, beginning around the Warlock's seduction of the narrator if I remember correctly, where Krilanovich describes things as black over and over again—black tar firebreath—and so many things are black black black—black crickets, black eyes, a black horse, blackbirds, black raindrops, black bones, black smoke—and this repetition is drilled in and in and in. It's so interesting, and so visceral!)

This book feels like finding a tooth in the fast food you ordered. Disgusting and horrifying in a way that makes you beg for context like it is water in a galactic drought. How did this make its way out of Krilanovich's mouth? I feel like she is here, gnawing on me. This book isn't a good time. It feels like a drugged haze. It feels like waking up naked at night behind the dumpster at Safeway with no memory of how you got there. Five fucking stars.

This book made me realize that no matter how batshit a book is—how experimental your style is, how unlikeable your characters are, how incomprehensibly you may write because of neurodivergency—there will always be someone out there who is touched by your work. There is always SOMEONE who will vibe with it, you just need to find them. I am that person for TOEC, and I do not think, thankfully, that I am alone in it. I'm looking forward to Krilanovich's next book, out in a few days, called Acid Green Velvet. I'm not usualllyyy into Westerns, but I'm interested in seeing what she does with it, because TOEC was her debut in 2010 and she has not published anything since.

Low Kill Shelter was INSANE. I found out about Porpentine's work recently and am reading Serious Weakness at the moment, but when I realized LKS was shorter, I decided to start it when I couldn't sleep at 3AM. I zoomed through it in one sitting! It's so fascinating—my favorite theme is "I'll love you even if you get worse", and this embodies it to the literal. Iran cares for Jess even after he transforms (the book is about a new form of hyperultramegarabies), still cares for him, even loves him enough to satiate him sexually in his rabid form.

He doesn't seem to see Jess as not-Jess, just an altered form of Jess, and I find that this is the way I prefer to be seen as someone with a dissociative disorder—like the dissociated me isn't an entirely different being, floating outside the definition of me (whatever that is), enveloping and infecting and invading, but rather just me being affected by a particular circumstance. The me under stress = a me that is younger = still me, still one brain, still a whole self even when parts are cut out and laid back in without the stitching to keep them in place. Jess without this unnamed disease = the Jess with the unnamed disease = a Jess that is still Jess, just hungier and angrier. The others in LKS? Besides Iran? They shoot and kill the infected. Iran keeps Jess alive and tries to cure him. It reminds me of the way people would rather let the disabled die than work towards a better society for all, because it would be slightly inconvenient while adjusting.

Iran is so calm. He takes the maltreatment he receives from society. Which is why I really really loved the end, when (SPOILERS!) Jess infects him and the canineness of it all kicks in. It is so cathartic to see an autistic character release himself from what society expects him to be--complacent in his position—and kill the ones who taunt them like an animal. Porpentine's prose skills combined with Porpentine's unique grasp on literary humor makes this just an absolutely killer (ha, okay bad joke) read and I have to rip this book apart again later, I think. It's so….

Behind the goring is a half-eaten heart that still hammers on--half in the hand, the other part pulsing deep in the stomach; it is a feelbadgood novel. Even the most grotesque moments of this book still carry an undercurrent of deep devotion that I simply adore. Some parts of this book were predictable, and it is a pandemic story and very clearly so, but I find it subverts the common themes in post-COVID pandemic stories and even the predictability feels good in a way, because I just wanted Iran to snap on Nelson the whole damn time. I love this novella.

And finally:

Unfortunately, I have been thinking non fucking stop about The Seep.

Okay, its potential took over my brain.

See, The Seep is about a near future where Earth has been invaded by these tiny aliens called The Seep, who have made life on Earth into a utopia. Bigotry and capitalism are gone because we have the ability to feel one another’s pain and everything can be provided by Seep. (Except the Seep can still evict you from your house and give it to someone else if you don’t take care of it enough. But you can always go live somewhere else!) People can change forms at will, can live forever, and can turn into babies. One of the supporting characters is a sapient bear. It is similar to Apple TV’s “Pluribus”, which is why I picked it up, but honestly, the worldbuilding here is the best part of the book, and the worldbuilding itself isn’t even explored as much as it could have been. Pluribus simply just did it better.

I loved Trina. Trina, whose wife asks her to become her mother when she turns into a baby, who just can’t do it. Trina, who becomes an alcoholic after her wife turns into a baby, who grieves and grieves and grieves, for years and years. Trina, who fought to be herself and transition and now lives in a world where gender can be changed by the wave of a wand. Which is a good thing, but must feel odd when you faced such a struggle! Trina is an amazing main character to me in terms of personality, but in Porter’s portrayal of her, there are a few things that didn’t feel great.

First off, she is Native American, but in a way where it’s like. Okay. She’s Dubiously Vaguely Nonspecifically Native American. That’s all we know. We don’t learn any specifics about that. Exploring the Native American experience on an Earth that has been invaded and assimilated into One Universal Culture is something that would have been immensely appropriate for the story and something I honestly expected to be explored when I learned about this part of Trina, but literally any detail at all about this part of her is missing. Her race is mentioned in passing twice and that’s it. It seems like a massive oversight considering the nature of the story to not include this at all. It almost feels like Porter was afraid of touching on the subject. When I finished this, I looked up The Seep and it was something that readers who are of color unlike me have also discussed in the past. Additionally, A Storygraph user writes:

…Her being native has no impact on the story other than the author
occasionally using her full name to remind us “hey, remember that Trina is
native!” We never even find out her tribe. The premise of this book, in
contrast, in the hands of a native author might have resulted in
explorations of how something like the land back movement interacts with the Seep’s need to make everyone happy. How does the Seep prioritize who gets to be happy: a native person whose life would be better off with their ancestral land or someone who isn’t native but is happiest living where they grew up? That’s an interesting question, which I would’ve found way more compelling than whatever actually Trina does.

It just feels bad.

I also felt as if Trina’s addiction was not handled as well as it could have been. I have many addicts in my family, and have been one. An addict’s relationship with their addiction is complex, highly nuanced. Trina’s addiction feels surface-level—-she likes to drink, she begs YD for a drink who gives in, she drinks too much… for a novel that is primarily about grief, though, I expected it to be explored in more depth than just “drinks too much because she’s sad”. That is absolutely part of addiction…. but it’s not all. Trina was portrayed as very addicted to alcohol, but I don’t know. It felt secondary, when her story is about the impact of grief and pain and loss. It felt like a stereotypical inclusion. Of course she’s sad, she drinks.

Where’s the guilt over doing things that harm others just to get to your substance? In my worst days I was spending my entire monthly income on extremely high dose energy drinks and getting in verbal fights with anyone who told me to stop and it didn’t matter who I hurt or what I said as long as I got what I needed. I was mixing thousands of miligrams of caffeine with 30 miligrams of adderall and hundreds of miligrams of marijuana, adding 1mg of Ativan in sometimes just for fun. I was killing my body and I was having physical effects nearly every day. I don’t think there is only one valid experience of addiction, to be clear—I’m saying what we see in the book doesn’t treat Trina’s addiction with the depth it would realistically have in her situation.

And then there’s fucking Horizon Line. I have not yet encountered a media character that annoys me more than fucking Horizon Line, and how his acts are portrayed. Trina calls him out because he uses his dead Black lover’s appearance as his own appearance come The Seep, taking on the face and body of a dead Black kid when he is a white guy and becoming famous under that image. It’s obviously reprehensible. When we see Horizon Line later, he is taking a boy Trina saw, a boy from a place called the Compound—a place free of Seep life that he had been exiled from—-and Trina decides to follow him to get the boy away from Seep corruption or whatever. She follows Horizon Line to get to the boy, kills Horizon Line, and is taken into a dream sequence thingy where he appears as his true self - an old white dude - and says “You were right, I was racist, I’m sorry” and then dies. Like ??????????? There’s nothing about him realizing his actions were wrong, no insight on why or how he got to that point or what experiences he had that made him reconsider. He is just racist at one point, disappears, and then reappears suddenly racism-cured. And then Trina moves back into her house—the one The Seep wanted to kick her out of (and that fact is never mentioned again, so I guess she just considers it totally acceptable by the end)—AND LEAVES THE BOY with the Seep-obsessed folks—-and submits to a world that evicts people for depression. That tries to erase people’s memories without their consent to keep them happy. And the book ends there.

It needed to be longer, I think. We needed to learn more about The Compound and why the kid got exiled. This kid who is literally like an accessory to Trina, who could be replaced by a Poodle with little or no change to the story. We needed Deeba—Trina’s wife who is the catalyst of the story—-to be more than just Trina’s Dead Wife. To have characterization. We needed to learn more about Trina after her journey and how she readjusts to the world after she finally starts trying to heal from Deeba’s death. More about how she feels about The Seep at the end. We needed to learn more. It needed more!!! And we just didn’t get it.

Anyway, Trina x The Seep smut when, I guess? ‘Cause that’s pretty much all that I’m going to remember, which I feel really bad about saying…

3.25 stars.

stream of consciousness sept 02

I keep thinking about that one deadjournal post from 2002:

Life is so fucking wonderful. Everything is so wonderful, I came home tonight and danced in circles. I smiled at all my moms friends and gave them hugs and they told me how much I was growing up. I laughed and I skipped and I, for once in a long while, smiled for no reason at all. I never want this feeling to go away and if it does…then I’m damned but that’s all right. I want to take the sky and kiss it. It’s so beautiful. People are so beautiful.

Life is so fucking wonderful. Life is like dancing as a [ ], when I was six and seven and eight (never after nine), how I used to do little plays in the retirement community park pool, prancing through the sweat-sour water for everyone to watch–I was a mermaid, I was a ninja, I was everything except a child. I came home tonight and I danced with my bird. I am a child now, except I am not, and I forgot how to dance in the pool. I can only move freely when my bird is watching.

I’m pretty sure things are going to be okay, because they have to be. If not, I am damned, but as long as I have my beloved by my side and my family and my cat I’ll be fine, except everyone besides me is getting older, moving closer and closer to that big sky mouth. I don’t know how to write without comparing it to anything else and I don’t know how to love without comparing it to anything else and no words can capture the vividity of my love. I’m pretty scared of it—of my love and how humongous! and! giant! I can become even underneath the ol’ crushing weight of the universe that spreads across my chest every night, settling on the breastbone to crumble it down into little powder for God to snort. (Sorry God! I know you don’t demonize addicts anyway, though. Right? Please?) I just love and love and love relentlessly. I think the people I love are finally the people deserving of it, and I think the people I love are deserving of the uncrushing universe—a lighter world, like a dress that swishes and sways when you twirl! The thing is though they do not receive this world. Life is not so fucking wonderful. And how can I fix it? How do I perform heart surgery over telehealth? I want to at least be the IV (not four—I’m more people than that!) but I’m stuck in Michigan. At least it’s not the Southwest anymore but I miss the big city.

I don’t know but its like. Here we are at the center of it all. I was the tallest kid in class, so tall—4’4 by 4 (a dooming!). It was easy to use me because it wasn’t easy to break me. I was also the tallest mountain in the desert and the widest planet in the solar system and maybe too heavy for surgery. Here we are at the center of it all—the core of the largest planet and the inner cave of the mountain, the stomach and the wombless womb. I wish I could keep everyone safe inside of me in a normal way but I am eternally hollow. Here I am at the center and I just saw a ghost but I think the ghost was my cat from when I was 9. I’m scared, mom.

I miss listening to music in the car with my cousins back when they could stand to look at me. I miss when I wanted to go to art school so terribly that I’d fantasize about running away from my school and begging art school on my knees to let me in (later: take me back!) and now in the most shocking turn of events ever it’s religion school I’m begging to escape to. I don’t think religion is escape it’s more like a building block—one of the various glass bottle shards in the ugly mosaic beginner’s craft of me—but I think I am trying to distract myself by burying myself in the world just like nana did. Sometimes I wonder if God loved us so much They stopped with us and said “this is enough for me!” or if They kept making worlds and starting new projects impulsively like I do. Unlike me I don’t think God has abandoned his project(s) I just hope he isn’t too busy with them to speak to me at Meeting this week.

Oh yeah!!! I went to Meeting last week!!! First time ever. I dissociated the whole time I don’t think I was really there nor was I with God nor was I back in the tornado’s deceptively sweet chocolate-vanilla swirl—the one that lured me in with ice cream and spit me out like the sourest of toppings—so at least there’s that but this week I really want to be present so I can listen appropriately. I guess my biggest fear with becoming Quaker is that maybe I’ll never actually hear that Voice again but I think the point is that you have to keep listening regardless—the crux, the foundation, is hope. God would listen to my pleas I think, unlike her. I’m realizing some things as I write this like my life before needs to be shed like tired reptile wrappings and I need to give birth to myself (the only way I will ever be able to give birth!) and say THIS IS THE ONLY LOVE I HAVE EVER HAD THAT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE ON THE MOVIES. ON THE SONGS. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN NOW. THE PAST NO LONGER MATTERS WITH THEM.

Anyway when I went to Meeting, they saw I was new and asked if they could give me a hug. I had never felt a Godly embrace but I think being hugged by so many accepting people is probably the closest I will ever get to one until the day I can hold my beloved in my arms. I want to soar and I want to burrow. I want to get a good grade in oophrectomy, which is normal to want and possible to achieve. And I want the world to be safe. I want everyone to be safe. Why can’t everyone be safe?
